Research Project: Supporting ERG Members and Leaders

Lego researcher

Employee resource groups (ERG) and employee affinity groups are becoming increasingly common and are often a cornerstone of an organisational EDI policy. Yet there’s a lack of evidence around how they drive impact and, crucially, how being a member can impact employee wellbeing and perception.

In fact there is strong evidence to suggest that people leading these groups are overwhelmed, unsupported and unappreciated, leading to burnout. We also know ERG members are likely to be from marginalised groups, so if the work they do isn’t recognised this could unwittingly replicate and compound existing inequities.

What little research exists indicates that ERGs are very effective in community building but the role assigned to them in EDI strategy typically goes a lot further than that.

So we’d like to gather more evidence.

We started this research project with a qualitative report which gave us insight into the challenges and difficulties people experienced through their work with ERGs. Now we’d like to gather some more data to further understand and support the folks doing this work.

The people doing this work are contributing a great deal of value to the organisation but they are rarely being rewarded for it and they need help. This research will help ensure that we can share good practice guidelines with organisations and EDI professionals so that the work of ERGs is supported and recognised.

The survey is anonymous and will only take 3 minutes to complete. Click here to take the survey.

To thank you for taking the time, we’d like to offer a free 60 mins strategy session with your ERG once you’ve reached a minimum of 25 responses.
