Your D&I advocates & allies need support to drive change.

In many organisations, the people doing much of the critical work on diversity & inclusion are doing so on top of the job they were employed to do.

We wanted to better understand them - their motivations, their challenges and what support they need - so we conducted a qualitative research project.

Our findings were in equal part inspiring and concerning.

The people we interviewed were all doing incredible, inspiring work that made a real difference to a lot of people on a day to day basis. But they were often struggling to feel like they were having an impact on the organisation overall - to create lasting change.

We also found that for many, despite finding the work incredibly motivating and rewarding they also paid a price in terms of their own stress levels or career progression.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the employees most motivated to take on this work were those directly impacted by bias and discrimination, those who are marginalised or in the minority. This matters because organisations are inadvertently relying on their marginalised employees to fix structural inequality.

Our aim is to ensure employees from minority or marginalised groups can be a key part of creating change if they want to - without having to shoulder the responsibility or suffer further than they already have.

“We're here to create change and I see no evidence of it. Like yeah you can do all the parties and festivities you want, but where are people of colour? Where are they in management positions?”
