At The Honeycomb Works, our mission is for everyone at work to feel like they belong and are free to invent.

Throughout the course of doing this work, we have come into contact with people at many organisations who believe in this mission as strongly as we do. We couldn’t help but notice that many of these people were deeply involved in Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) or Staff Affinity Networks (SANs). 

We did some in-depth qualitative research which confirmed what we’d suspected: despite the many rewards of being part of ERGs, some of these folks were exhausted, frustrated and prevented from having the impact they wanted (and needed) to have. Some also reported negative consequences for their career.

This report contains a quantitative analysis, building on these findings and adding to what we know about the cost, benefits and best practice for engaging in ERGs or SANs.
